Puddy was undoubtedly a skilled exponent of the silent miaow. This really was an endearing quality but I secretly hoped that one day she would say her 'first word' (notice a little anthropomorphism here?). I had to wait until her second birthday but it was worth it. I clearly remember opening the fridge one day (usually a good way of getting all the cats to come from various directions) and finding myself surrounded by four of them, all apparantly starving. A discordant round of dubious harmonies began, all of them competiting to make the biggest impression. Suddenly a silence fell and three of the quartet turned to Puddy as she took a deep breath. With a serious expression of great concentration she opened her mouth and went, 'a'. She jumped back, as surprised as the others that something had actually come out. The 'mi' and 'ow' remained missing for the rest of her life but I didn't care.
